Ben Rowley looks forward to working in a profession with so many opportunities. The biggest problem is choosing which career path to follow.

Ben chose Nursing at Otago Polytechnic due to an interest in the field of health and the opportunity nursing provides to meet people from "all walks of life".

“This degree has really helped me to get out of my comfort zone, encouraging me to dig deep at times to bring out my best self. I am definitely a different person now compared to who I was before starting this degree.

“I’ve met a whole bunch of amazing people through this degree, including colleagues, lecturers and patients. Everyone has their own story to share. It’s such a privilege to hear and learn from them.

“Being part of someone’s health journey is an honour. I have been lucky enough to follow a few patients right through their journey, seeing them recover and go back to living a happy, healthy life. There’s no better feeling than having someone thank you for the care you have given them.”

Collaborating with other nursing students, and IT students from the University, Ben has also been working on an app for managing shift work.

“The app aims to make the organisation of shift work and rosters for nursing simpler and time efficient. It’s a work in progress, but nursing entrepreneurship is definitely an area I’m interested in.”

Ben has some great advice for others considering Nursing.

“Be prepared to show up each day, take every opportunity that comes your way and give each challenge your best shot.”
