Fees & funding
Don't let the cost of education put you off studying – there are lots of ways to study for free or get funding to reduce your tuition fees. Plus, if you’re a first-year domestic student, you could be eligible for one year of fees-free study.

How fees work
In simpler terms, Tuition Fees just mean’s how much your programme will cost. In some cases, the tuition fee may also include the cost for tools and equipment required for your programme. To be sure what your fess will include, check your programme information page for the most accurate information.
Paying for study
There are plenty of ways to continue with your education without worrying about the cost. Free study through TTAF, first years free, scholarships and StudyLink are great options to look into.
There’s a range of government schemes in New Zealand right now to encourage people of any age to upskill and retrain for high-demand industries. There's also schemes to cover costs for your first year of tertiary study in any subject. We also have wide range of public and private scholarships that could help pay your study costs or your accommodation costs.
Right now, the government is investing in education to remove cost barriers for tertiary education and to fill skill-shortage areas. Let them invest in you, so you can gain a qualification that gives you recognised skills and greater job opportunities.

Free study
Fees Free - your first year fees are free
If this is your first time enrolling in tertiary study (over 60 credits at Level 3 or higher) in New Zealand you may be eligible to have your first year of study for free.
All the details and criteria are on the Fees Free website. There's an eligibility-checker tool where you can enter your National Student Number (NSN) to see if you’re entitled to funding.
If you are eligible, we’ll organise your fees with the Tertiary Education Commission when you're enrolled to study with us.
Youth Guarantee Scheme
The Youth Guarantee is a funding scheme for people 16–19 years old (or 15 if you’ve got an early leaving exemption letter). It means you can enrol in Level 2 or Level 3 programmes, cost-free.
We have various level 2 and 3 courses available under this scheme which can prepare you with practical skills for work. When you study any of the funded courses, the Youth Guarantee Fees Scheme covers your tuition fees and the material and equipment costs of your programme.
Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF)
The government has announced a new Targeted Training and Apprenticeship Fund (TTAF) that supports any domestic student to study/train for high-demand industries in New Zealand for free.
Plus, if you enrol in, and complete, a TTAF programme for free, this does not impact on your ability to then also use the Fees Free scheme for further study (as long as you meet the eligibility criteria).
The targeted areas include all the programmes listed below - and they'll be fully-funded until December 2022.

Student services fee
Studylink loans & allowances
You can still apply to StudyLink for a student loan, a student allowance and course-related costs. This is only available for domestic students.
Student loan
You can get a Student Loan to pay your study fees, your course-related costs and your living costs. If none of the other options on this page are relevant to you, you should consider applying to StudyLink for a student loan to pay for your study.
Note: You have to pay StudyLink back for any money you borrow for fees, living costs and course-related costs - but not until you have a full-time job.
Student allowance
You may be eligible for a Student Allowance. You don’t need to repay a Student Allowance as it is not considered part of your loan. Check the criteria for an allowance before you apply for Student Loan living costs. This is important to ensure that you don’t borrow more than you need to.
The StudyLink website has an eligibility test and further information about the options available to you.
